Radcliffe Swimming Club
Affiliated to the ASA

 Information

Radcliffe Swimming Club is one of the largest swimming clubs in the area and offers swimming teaching and coaching from beginner level up to competitive level as well as coaching in water polo. The Club is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association and has recently been awarded ASA "Swim21"accreditation and Sport England "Clubmark"

Minimum age for membership is five years. Each member is placed in a group according to his/her ability. Non-swimmers and improvers begin in the teaching pool, whereas competent swimmers will be put into the intermediate training group or the advanced training group in the main pool. The swimmers are grouped according to their ability and progression from one group to next is determined by the teacher, based upon progress and the swimmer achieving the standards in the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming. Copies of the criteria required at each level of the National Plan are available from the desk. Under no circumstances must parents move their child to another group.

Each member pays an annual membership fee and an admission charge when attending a session. Once a member has paid his membership fee, he/she can attend at any time when there is a relevant swimming session taking place. However it helps the Club's administration if swimmers would try to come regularly each week to the same session(s). Swimmers will make more progress if they attend regularly and attend more than once per week. The Club's sessions are detailed below and it can be seen that any member may attend at least twice per week and in some cases can attend up to six times per week.

All swimmers must wear regulation swimwear, i.e. proper trunks (not swim shorts) and costumes. Jewellery and watches must not be worn. All equipment is provided for the swimmers except flippers and goggles, but these will not be needed until the swimmer joins the advanced training group, though it may be a good idea to get used to the wearing of goggles in the intermediate training group. Swim hats should be worn.

This is a competitive swimming club and the Club is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association and several of its local swimming associations in order to compete in their competitions. The Club enters various league programmes each year, and also encourages swimmers to enter local association and county age group and championship competitions. If selected to represent Radcliffe S C in the league events, the swimmer name will be entered on a team sheet on the Club's notice board. Swimmers should indicate availability to swim on the team sheet as soon as possible.

The Club Championship Gala is held in November and a Shrimps Gala for the younger members is held in March/April.

The Club has a water polo section with a training session for seniors and older juniors from 9.00 - 10.00pm on Monday evenings and 9.00 - 10.00pm on Thursday evenings. Training for young swimmers of advanced training group standard is available through the Bury Water Polo Development Scheme from 8.00 - 9.00pm at Radcliffe Pool, admission £1.50 payable at reception. Training for girls of advanced training group standard takes place from 7.00 - 8.00pm on Fridays. Water Polo skills are taught as part of the National Plan for teaching swimming during alternate Sunday width sessions.

The Club enters individuals and teams into biathlon and similar events at various times during the year. Biathlon events involve both running and swimming. If you are a good runner as well as a good swimmer, why not try this sport. If interested contact Mr Mark Evans.

The Club arranges regular 'Time Trials' giving members an opportunity to be timed over 25m on all four strokes. Distance 'Badge Nights' are held at suitable times during the year. Younger members are tested over 5m, 10m and 25m on a regular basis.

Members of the Club are expected to conduct themselves properly at all times. They should be positive and encouraging to other swimmers. Rowdy and inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.

All members should look at the club notice board regularly. It is situated outside the creche on the first floor. In addition a monthly newsletter is produced which contains a varied collection of news and information about the current activities of the Club. The Club also has a web site, www.radcliffesc.org.uk which contains general information. News and information is given regularly to members with email addresses.

The Club runs a swim shop where members may purchase swimwear, flippers, goggles etc at or below shop prices.

The Club is run by a Committee of elected members. Their names and positions are on the notice board, The Club's annual general meeting is held in December each year and Committee meetings are held each month.

The Club is funded by payment of membership fees and admission charges. The cost of hiring the pool is considerable and the purchase of equipment and the general running costs does put a strain on the Club's finances. However, every effort is made to keep the fees to a minimum.

All teachers and coaches are qualified to Amateur Swimming Association standards. The Chief Coach receives an honorarium and expenses. All other teachers/coaches are entirely voluntary. Any parent willing to help on the poolside and wishing to take A.S.A qualifications should contact any Committee member. All training costs are met by the Club.
