DAVE RALPHY BRIGGS MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT Sadly Dave Briggs passed away in December 2009 from Cancer. A member of Radcliffe ASWP Club for many years, Dave also played water polo for the Police, which is where Mike Short knew him as “Ralphy”. It was decided to hold a tournament in his honour and try and raise donations for cancer research. To this end, Taff, Stephen Davidson, ceased to shave for several weeks before the tournament and agreed to have a full head and beard shave in return for donations. Some of the finance towards the cost of running the tournament was provided by the British Police Swimming and Water polo section Known as PSUK (Police Swimming UK). This enabled more of the money raised on the day to go directly to the charity, along with any amounts collected on the day too. The tournament was held at Radcliffe pool in May 2010. Radcliffe came top, winning 2 of their games and drawing their 3rd. Mike Short said afterwards that he was sure Dave was the teams extra man and how he would have really enjoyed the day. The large Cup can be seen in the clubs trophy cabinet, which is in the reception area of Radcliffe pool. Each competing team received a glass plaque. Radcliffe’s is on view to the left of the cup. After the games everyone retired back to a local pub where food was provided, (again courtesy of funding from the Police). Socialising continued for many hours!! Overall the Tournament was a great success. It was enjoyed by everyone, with a plea, supported by Dave’s widow, that the tournaments become an Annual event. The next one is on 21st May 2011 again at Radcliffe pool 11.30 till 4.30. EVERYONE IS VERY WELCOME |
