 About The Club

RadcliffeSwimming Club was founded in 1899 with the opening of the new swimming baths in Whittaker Street in Radcliffe. The Club consequently celebrated its centenary in 1999. The present headquarters of the Club is at the swimming pool in Green Street, Radcliffe which was opened in 1968.

The Club has always been a properly constituted club with an approved constitution. The Club is well managed and has an annually elected Committee which is extremely active in managing the Club both on a day  to day basis and in future planning and development. The Committee has developed the club activities both at the sporting level and in its general administration such that the Club is now in a financially sound condition.

The Club is affiliated to a number of bodies and associations, which govern the proper operation of the sport. The main one of these is the Amateur Swimming Association (A.S.A), through which the Club maintains a comprehensive insurance policy.

Radcliffe Swimming Club is now enjoying one of its most popular periods in its history. The membership is at a  high level. Last year the paid up membership was over 350,  consisting mainly of youngsters from the Radcliffe and District area and the Club has begun this year with a waiting list of over 100. The Club admits members from children of starting school age to adults regardless of sex, race or creed.

The Club offers swimming tuition ranging from beginners to learn the basic stroke techniques to swimmers being trained up to a full competitive level.  There are opportunities for all members to attain swimming awards both at distance level and for skill attainment. The Club offers a range of training sessions at the Radcliffe Pool to cover the swimming requirements of the members.

The Club’s coaching and teaching staff are highly qualified to levels set by the governing swimming and lifesaving bodies. The Club runs courses on a regular basis to enable parents and the older teenage club members to obtain teaching and lifesaving qualifications. All the staff are unpaid volunteers; the Chief Coach receiving an honorarium.

The Club holds a number of internal galas, including the Club Championships. These latter events are for the more competitive club swimmers, who compete for the Club’s perpetual trophies. These trophies have been presented to the Club over the period of its existence. The other club galas are for the less experienced swimmers in order to give them an introduction to competitive swimming.

The Club’s competitive swimmers train as a squad and compete in a range of events and leagues in the local area. The Club’s better swimmers are encouraged to enter for the open swimming events which are held at local and district level.

The Club has operated a water polo section for most of its existence and the senior and junior teams compete in a number of local league and cup competitions.
